Why gather on the west lawn of the United States Capitol Building?

One of the central elements of The DC Awakening is the strong admonition for Christians to step into the public square and engage culture. For too long the church has retreated into the safety of their private world. Christians have felt comfortable in their church services, youth groups, prayer meetings, concerts and pot luck suppers.

The Holy Spirit is clearly calling us to follow in the footsteps of Christ and the early church. Luke 14:23 commands us to “go out into the highways and byways and compel them to come in.” God wants us to “invade” every aspect of culture and society with the gospel of Jesus Christ and the principles of God’s Kingdom.

In light of this prophetic and sacred call, we knew The DC Awakening had to be held in the public square for the entire world to see. We wanted to be “a city on the hill” that would be viewed by all.

The only question we wrestled with was: W H E R E ?

Early on it became clear that God was directing us to hold the event in Washington, D.C. There were many reasons why the Holy Spirit was leading this way. Washington is the nation’s capital. People from all 50 states work and are represented in D.C. through their members of Congress. The Supreme Court is located here. Most of the nation’s of the world have embassies in Washington. Therefore, any spiritual awakening in D.C. would truly have a global impact.

All of these issues factored into our decision. However, one of the overbidding reasons was more prophetic and symbolic in nature. Whenever a world leader, a president or a king, comes to visit America they always stop in Washington, D.C. They come to our nation’s capital to represent their country and people. By coming to the Capitol and meeting with our elected officials they are, in reality, greeting everyone in our nation with just one visit.

So, as Christians crying out for a “visitation” from Jesus Christ, the King of the universe, we felt one of the first places He would come is our nation’s capital. As we continued to pray, what better place to hold The DC Awakening then on the very lawn of the United States Capitol!

We are on the very grounds where the Presidential Inaugural is held every four years. Many of the critical issues facing our country and the world are decided in the building that is steps away from where we will be praying and worshipping before God. For an entire week, in full view of Congress, we will be building a public altar awaiting God’s fire to fall.

What makes The DC Awakening even more powerful is that it is being held on the eve of our national elections. Almost all political commentators agree, the elections of 2008 will be one of the most important in America’s history.

Never before has a week long event like this taken place on the grounds of the United States Capitol. History will be made and we pray it will impact the future of our nation for generations to come.

“The priests could not enter the temple of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled it. When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshipped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying, ‘He is good; his love endures forever’.”
